8th Birthday Celebration of CHIME

Place

MIOT Hospitals, Chennai on 29th September, 2015

CHIME turns 8 on World Heart Day - Happy faces on a wonderful day

“The merit of CHIME is to deliver timely help at the right moment”
Mrs. Mallika Mohandas
Chairman - MIOT International

It is heartening to note that in this short span of 8 years, CHIME together with MIOT Centre for Children’s Cardiac Care have undertaken more than 800 free / subsidized heart surgeries for children coming from poor socio-economic status.

The day started very early - the Pediatric Cardiology Department and the CHIME Office was resonating with the chatter of little one’s with their parents- there was an air of gaiety and happiness all around. The families and children were happy to meet us without pain, on par, as friends rather than patients at a hospital. I think it was celebration time for us too as we saw the drastic change in our patients. They had grown and changed and had to introduce themselves. Vignesh who came when he was about 14 years is a tall gentleman, now in his 3rd year in Engineering College, as also Padayappa and Arun who are in their 10th standard. Strong young men they are today. We were touched they all took the day off for CHIME along with their parents.

Soon the CHIME office was flooded with children - such a joy - and a real respite listening to the happy sounds of children’s laughter, breaking the silence of the otherwise serious and intense work that happens here. The office was transformed into a fun place for children with decorations and a huge cake, and children hovering around. All of them wanted to cut the cake. And many hands clutched the knife. Some were blowing the candles.

We were really happy and fortunate to have Dr. Manjunath from L&T. Our Chairman, Mrs. Mallika Mohandas, received him and patients/parents along with Dr. Robert, Dr.Sangeetha, Dr. Shrinivasan and Dr. Bhagyavathy were there.

Most touching was the contribution of Satish Kumar, father of 1 year old Yashash who recently had his surgery at MIOT International aided by CHIME. A daily laborer in the city, he said he had had work all through the month of September and it was his wish that his donation to CHIME today would help another child. Vignesh said - one day I will become an Engineer and from my first salary I want to give something for a child with heart disease. You do not know what you have done for me.

The free camp was happening simultaneously - part of the CHIME’s birthday celebration - and children and families came from different places with the hope that they will find help and solace for their health Issues.

We had a magic show for the children who brought the crescendo of sounds of children down, only to be drowning the place with clapping and exclamations at the tricks the magician showed them. A wonderful memorable day - well spent. Each family went home with a sapling - a gift from CHIME - of the famous plant Karpooravalli or Plectranthusamboinicus which is the botanical name.

7th Birthday Celebration of CHIME

CHIME turns 7 on World Heart Day - Happy faces on a wonderful day

And 700+ is the number of children aided by CHIME. Not to forget the number of other needy patients, especially in the emergency unit of MIOT Hospitals who were aided when we had to go ahead with their treatment and never turn them out due to lack of funds.

The CHIME office did not wear the Hospital look this day, as children just were too eager, full of gaiety and laughter, the place was ringing with happiness. They came together, started off the day with putting down their feelings in art form, drawing as they waited for friends of CHIME, our supporters without whom CHIME could not have walked this way.. And they did drop in to say Hello to them.

It was indeed Party Time. Our Chairman, Doctors and staff of the Pediatric Cardio Unit and CHIME were all there to welcome them, and join parents and children to make it a memorable and beauteous day.

Vaugn Pinto wanted to write a verse for CHIME which he wrote so beautifully expressing his feelings..

You’ve been there for me,
When I needed you most,
I try to recall what happened when I was in the theatre.
You appeared and helped me with a golden coast,
Thank you CHIME,
For now I know I made a friend for life.

And so did Sivaranjan express through his drawing, thanking CHIME- 7 years later, after a critical surgery, he is now in college doing his B Com.

Little Jyoti Nila from the gypsy community was really thrilled she could do what she liked with her sketch pens, paper and pencil.

And so did all the other kids - Gavaskar, Padayappa, Rosemary, Viswa Prakash Nityashree, Akshiyni, Dinesh and a number of other children.

Pediatric Camp

Place

Kovalam - 11th September, 2014.

CHIME organized a paediatric camp at Kovalam for the local residents ahead of the Covelong surfing & music festival. The children's health camp included free consultation and necessary medications along with ECHO and ECG tests for children suspected to have heart disease. Seeming like a trickle when it started, the morning session witnessed around 141 patients and in the afternoon session there were around 119 patients - summing up to 260 for the camp. The doctors team also found the health status of the children at Kovalam to be nearly 100 per cent good. There was a lot of contentment and cheer in the faces of adults and children, the children looked happy. The camp that was restricted to children also entertained few age old people on their request for health check-up. The doctors graciously honored the request and went out of their way to help them by possible means. Other than the occasional cold and cough and a few respiratory ailments, and some vitamin deficiencies, a few children whose wounds were healing after scraps in school, falling down in games class etc there were no major problems which were usual like cases of mal nourishment, or polio, congenital anomalies etc. The children and parents were not only happy about the distribution of medicines but the children were thrilled about the caps they received as compliment from MIOT.

So far from both camps around 50 children have come to MIOT Hospitals for follow up and treatment. MIOT has gone a long way in creating health awareness among the community that had been ignorant of their issues and available treatment opportunities.

The camp also brought a lot of paediatric issues ranging from congenital defects, nutrition levels to everyday problems such as cold, coughs, and headaches. Certain deep seated psychology and psychiatric issues were also brought up. A number of common ailments were identified and given treatment on the spot during the camp; for the more serious issues ranging from congenital anomalies and minor surgeries the patients were asked to visit MIOT Hospitals. Treatment was undertaken for about 50 out of the 70 cases who came to MIOT Hospitals, CHENNAI.

The Management of the host organization was given a detailed report on the status of the children who were screened.

2009
Regular Camps at MIOT Hospitals for children, camps in districts, coordinating with Govt. Health Dept. & NGO’s to identify children with heart disease and spreading awareness and dispelling wrong notions.

One week free camp was held at MIOT Hospitals to aid children to visit the hospital free of cost of registration and all investigations. Different news papers carried the news and it was also announced on the children’s day celebrations held in November 2009. Many of the identified children are undergoing treatment already.

Children's Day 2009 - It was a great occasion when parents and children from all over Tamil Nadu were invited and in spite of all inconveniences they came together. The day was planned for children and families arriving from different parts starting with a sumptuous breakfast followed by a magic show to keep the children active and happy.

We witnessed an impromptu children's day program put up by the kids. One talked about the  significance of children's day, and two of them gave us a dance performance to the latest Tamil songs, gyrating on stage which considering they were heart patients was something which made even the doctors sit up in amazement. Just proved that a strong heart is the secret of good health.

Dr. Moorthy, Chief of Paediatric at the Children Hospital in Egmore was the Chief Guest of the day. He clarified the schemes of the government and also was in praise of the work done by MIOT and CHIME in helping so many children.

Parents and children came forward to talk about their emotional experiences with their child's illness and their days in the hospital with doctors, treatment and CHIME.
